Overview
The Water Ingress Detection System (WIDS) is designed for bulk carriers to detect and alarm for water ingress in cargo holds and void spaces in compliance with SOLAS Ch. XII Reg. 12. The system utilizes electrode-type level switches, alarm panels, and intrinsically safe barriers to provide real-time monitoring and alarms.
1. Safety Information (p.4-5)
- Electrical Hazard: Disconnect power before maintenance.
- Anti-Static Precautions: Handle PCBs with proper grounding.
- Storage Conditions: Keep equipment dry and in a controlled temperature environment.
2. System Components (p.10-15)
2.1 Main Alarm Panel
- Power Supply: AC 110/220V 60Hz, with DC 24V backup.
- Alarm Features: Visual and audible alarms, RS-485 output, and override function.
2.2 Repeater Alarm Panel (AU-160R) [Optional]
- Power Supply: 24VDC (18-32VDC).
- Communication: RS-485 for remote monitoring.
- Functions: LED alarm indicators, buzzer, and dimming function.
2.3 24-Channel Alarm Unit (AU-160D/W)
- Handles 24 alarm signals for monitoring water ingress.
- Override function for ballast tank alarms.
- Microprocessor-controlled alarm activation with adjustable input/output delays.
2.4 Electrode-Type Level Switch
- Detects water ingress and transmits signals to the alarm panel.
- Self-test device included for manual functional verification.
- Enclosure Rating: IP68, suitable for marine environments.
2.5 Intrinsically Safe Barrier
- Prevents electrical hazards in explosive environments.
- Model: Z966.H, ATEX-certified for hazardous areas.
3. System Operation & Alarms (p.16-19)
- Water Detection Mechanism:
- When water contacts the electrode switch, it triggers an alarm.
- Red LED → Main Alarm, Yellow LED → Pre-Alarm.
- Buzzer Alerts: Continuous, alternate, or silent modes available.
- Override Function: Temporarily disables alarms for ballast tanks.
- Communication: RS-485, with data logging for VDR (Voyage Data Recorder).
4. Installation Guidelines (p.20-24)
4.1 Main Alarm Panel Installation
- Mounted in the navigation bridge or a dedicated control room.
- Requires multi-pair cabling for power and signal transmission.
4.2 Level Switch Installation
- Installed in cargo holds and lower stool compartments.
- Protected with a filter to prevent debris clogging.
- Wiring must be waterproofed with silicone sealant.
5. Troubleshooting Guide (p.25-26)
Issue | Cause | Solution |
---|---|---|
No power indication | Faulty fuse or wiring | Replace fuse, check wiring |
No alarm activation | Sensor wiring issue | Check wiring & perform self-test |
False alarms | Water/moisture contamination | Clean sensor, inspect grounding |
Communication failure | RS-485 wiring issue | Verify connections & protocol |
6. Storage & Maintenance (p.6)
- Store in a dry, vibration-free location.
- Protect electrical components from moisture and static discharge.
- Regularly inspect and clean sensor electrodes.
